Dana is a Sanskrit word that means generosity. The Buddha said that no true spiritual life is possible without a generous heart. Generosity allies itself with an inner feeling of abundance – the feeling that we have enough to share.
Sharon Salzberg

In the Buddhist tradition and community, the teachings are given freely because they are considered priceless. We also practice dana (pronounced Donna), or generosity, by making monetary offerings for the teachings. Dana is not payment for goods or services rendered; it is given from the heart.

Tax-free donations through charitable distributions

You may be approaching or are already of the age when you need to take Required Mandatory Distributions (RMD’s) from your IRA (or other retirement account). These RMD’s become tax-free when you donate them directly to a charitable 501(c)(3) organization.

If you like to use your RMD to make a donation to River Wisdom, you can do this through what is called a qualified charitable distribution (QCD).  A QCD counts toward your RMD but is not treated as taxable income. To proceed, you will have to ask your IRA administrator to issue a check in the name of River Wisdom Insight Meditation. If you have any questions, speak to your accountant or contact Charlie Goldsmith (RWI Treasurer) at bendgold@aol.com.
